Kingsbury High School - 1963 City Champs

A few weeks ago, I found myself at an estate sale, buying books and all sorts of odd things. When I was leaving, I glanced in a cardboard box sitting in the driveway. Dumped inside, like so much trash, were more than a dozen old trophies, and I plucked this one from the pile, paid for it, and brought it home.

It was just covered in dirt and dust, and the base had come off, but when I cleaned it up and repaired it, I discovered it was quite a find. What you have here is the trophy presented to the basketball team of Kingsbury High School for winning the City Championship in 1963. It's a pretty cool-looking trophy, don't you think, with a plaque that lists Coach Bill Todd, and the members of the varsity team: Clyde Barnard, Tippy Rankin, Herb Slate, Mike Butler, Arthur Boone, Barry Cochran, Dave Grosmann, Alfred Stapp, Bob Shelton, Joe Hurt, and team manager James Durham.

The Lauderdale Library contains a set of old Kingsbury yearbooks, and the 1963 edition of the Talon tells the story of that team's accomplishments: "Completing their most successful season in the history of the school, the Falcon basketball team had a record of 26 wins and 2 losses. They won the Eastern Division and beat Frayser 54-49 for the City Championship. The Falcons were one of the highest ranked teams in the state, at one time being voted second place by the Associated Press."

Some of the scores were rather impressive. Kingsbury walloped East 82-47, beat Overton (ranked #1 in the state) 62-55, and set an all-time scoring record by completely overwhelming Trezevant 131-24. Other lopsided victories were over Catholic 82-41, Humes 89-48, and Westside 101-48.

And yet, half a century later, the actual trophy commemorating that remarkable season lay in a dusty cardboard box, neglected and forgotten. Very depressing. I'm glad I rescued it, but would prefer that it go to somebody at Kingsbury who could truly appreciate it. So if any of these team members are still around, or anybody who cares about the history of that school, just get in touch with me. I already have plenty of trophies of my own.

Here are some other shots of the trophy, and below you'll see a photo of the team, from the 1963 Kingsbury yearbook. For some reason, the players in the photo don't exactly match the names on the trophy. I don't know why.

That's a lovely bit of history. Hopefully someone will snap this up.

I'm only asking $25,999. That would reimburse me for the purchase price of the trophy, the cost of driving the gas-guzzling Daimler-Benz to and from the estate sale, professional cleaning and restoration costs (by me), research fees (the Lauderdales don't work cheap), maintenance of the Lauderdale Library, employee salaries, advertising and promotion costs (namely: a mention here; this blog doesn't pay for itself, you know), and a Certificate of Authenticity. Plus various and sundry expenses for food, lodging, medical insurance, pharmaceuticals, and liquor.

Quite a bargain, I'd say.

Reminds me of a BBC story this year concerning the European Cup (soccer - it's an English "Thang") being swiped from the pub while some players were celebrating. Guess it would be the equivalent of losing the Heisman Trophy at Hooters. Perhaps that is what happened here after a "celebration"?

Quite interesting even if you don't know the sport:

I was a member of the Class of 63 and also the creator of the website for our class. www.Kingsbury63.com I'm really amazed to read this and would love to recover the trophy for my class. I'm sure Kingsbury would be glad to have it back in their trophy case as well. Vance, would you contact me at glenn@kingsbury63.com. Several of the names on the trophy are 62-63 players who still live in Memphis. Thanks so much for posting this!! ~ Glenn Miller

I too was a member of the Kingsbury class of '63. Thanks so much for the research and time spent restoring it. If you get it to Glenn I am sure he will get it to the player or give it to the school.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. If you would like more info on how we dinosaurs lived check out the fantastic website Glenn designed. Www.kingsbury63.com.

Vance: IF someone from '63 fails to get this from you, I would be glad to get it for the Kingsbury Alumni Association, Inc. We might even be able to place it in the KHS Hall of Fame that is being rebuilt piece by piece. Let me or Glenn Miller know something.
THANKS!
Bill Harbin, KHS Alumni Assoc. Vice-President.
PS: yes, I am associated with the Harbin's of Whitehaven; J.C. Harbin, .. great-nephew. He was my grandfathers' brother.

Bill, I have already donated the trophy to Glenn Miller, Kingsbury Class of 1963. In fact, I delivered it personally, and refused all offers to be reimbursed, because that's the kind of guy I am (well, also because I paid very little for it). Perhaps he will be able to do something with it. It's a fine-looking trophy, and obviously a nice memento of one of Kingsbury's many notable athletic achievements, so I hope someday it can end up in your Hall of Fame.

Now, Bill, about you: Do you have any good photos of Harbin's that I could post on this blog? It was such a popular place, and I've only seen a couple of postcards and maybe one photo. That's it. If you have anything, or can direct me to someone who does, please contact me: askvance@memphismagazine.com.

Many thanks!

Vance,
Let me know if you have any luck writing off the $25,999 on your taxes as a charitable donation? I feel quite sure I could scrounge up a few tidbits of equal worth around my house.
Thanks.
