East Parkway Is "Knightdale Bypass"? Since When?

Posted by Vance Lauderdale on Sun, Feb 13, 2011 at 10:30 PM

Okay, I'm spending WAY too much precious time on Google and Bing these days, "flying" over our city in response to recent questions.

And today I noticed this. Look closely at the street names.

Since when has East Parkway ever been called "Knightdale Bypass"??

And where the heck is Knightdale, anyway, and why are we bypassing it?

The mind reels ...

It is a segment of Highway 64 in North Carolina that apparently got applied to the entire length of 64. I submitted this to Google Maps a couple of weeks ago and received the following response:

"Your Google Maps problem report has been reviewed, and you were right! We'll update the map soon and email you when you can see the change. "

That was on 1/27/2011 - I have not yet received any notification that it has been updated.

That's not very reassuring. I mean, it would be bad enough to put the wrong name on a street a few blocks away. But in the wrong STATE?

Perhaps this is why the Lauderdale Mansion doesn't show up on Google.

Heh ... I wish it were just one state, but pick any section of 64 from New Mexico to NC — that is the LONGEST damn bypass I've ever seen. What are they trying to bypass — I-40?

I thought the Lauderdale Mansion was invisible due to stealth technology and the radar-jamming apparatus in the basement? Well, that and the ... erm ... "donation" your family made to google in order to have it cloned out in Photoshop so the plebes and hoi polloi (do they still make those) couldn't see it in all its glory from the air.

Our main camouflage is kudzu. Ever since we fired the gardeners, you can't even see the house from the road anymore.

HAHA, I live 3 miles from the Knightdale bypass in the small metropolis of Archer Lodge, NC. i moved 850 miles from Memphis but live within 12 miles of I-40, 3 miles from Hwy 70, and 3 miles from Hwy 64. All roads lead to ME. Or is that Memphis?

Knightdale is also the home of the world famous "Jack Ass" road, mentioned on Late Night about 10 years ago... once word got out..... Well they stole the road name signs, and the town leaders decieded to rename the road... and the rest is history...

Although the street signs haven't been replaced to reflect the new name, Google maps have been showing the new name for a while. I'm not sure when the official change takes effect. I kind of like the new name.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Ah, the lady's way of saying, "You stupid SOBs." I still envision the horses as they gallop the Parkways. So much for technology, and no, Vance, don't even go there with me. I "envision" — I do NOT remember!

For the longest time, Google had my shop on Chelsea listed as the Memphis Country Club. It took several emails and as many months to fix it ;-)

Here's a link to an article showing that both I-65 and I-40 are the Knightdale Bypass.

STILL not fixed. I was looking at a "living social" deal today in The Commercial Appeal and noticed that it was off Knightdale Bypass. I was very confused what that was since I've lived in Memphis now 40 years and never heard of "Summer" called that. So, I "googled" it and this is where I got to. Thanks for the info, Vance. I am also going to report it to Google Maps as a wrong street name and see what the response is.

My Google-based GPS occasionally claims that stretches of Summer Avenue are also Knightdale Bypass.

Failed to add that I'd noticed Union has been renamed Knightdale Bypass, which is what led me to do a websearch, which is what led me here.
