Griz May Get Ronnie Brewer

Posted by Chris Herrington on Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 2:19 PM

I heard this afternoon that the Grizzlies were working on a deal that would send a protected first-round pick next season to the Utah Jazz for swingman Ronnie Brewer. I have not confirmed that this is a finalized deal, but the Salt Lake Tribune is also reporting that Brewer could be traded today.

More as it comes.

UPDATE: Brewer deal done, for protected first-rounder in 2011. I'll be on the Chris Vernon Show at 4:20. Will try to have a trade breakdown post up before then.

If he helps the Grizzlies hold serve when the starters are out and cut down on OJ and Rudy's minutes, this will be a great trade for us.

I love the deal, but I tell you what it damned well better NOT be .... is a hedge against/(AWFUL) reason for going cheap and letting Rudy walk this summer.

You hear me, Heisley? Go cheap and let Rudy walk outta here and I'll never get excited about a thing this team does again. I mean, why would I bother? I think a good portion of the fan base, BECAUSE of the core we've built with Rudy, OJ, Marc and ZBo, have forgiven the team for absolutely BLOWING the last two lotto picks (pains one to even think about how much stronger this team would be with Tyreke and any number of folks other than Conley) .... But, go cheap and let the most promising core we've ever assembled fracture and I'm done.

Rudy Gay, while he has his flaws, is, in my eyes, becoming a go-to, 22-23 ppg guy in this league. Those ain't easy to come by. And, they aren't replaced by Ronnie Brewer. That said, again ... I love the deal if it's to strengthen the bench and play Brewer alongside or behind OJ/Rudy ... if they're starting to hedge their bets with Rudy with this acquisition, I'm done. And, thing is, with Heisley, I wouldn't doubt that for a MINUTE.

What do you think, Chris?

I wonder how much we will pay to keep Rudy here. There's quite a few teams in the East who would want him. If we get rid of him then I think that means we're giving up on the "core group" idea.
I know this is an aside but why is everyone so concerned about LeBron leaving Cleveland? Best record in the league. Shaq is still a presence and Jamison is a big addition. Is he really going to give all that up to go to a team in total rebuild like either New York team?
