The winning story will be published in the June 2013 issue of the magazine. The winning writer will receive $1,000 as grand prize. And if quality warrants, two honorable-mentions will be awarded, with $500 going to each of the writers. Some rules to go by:
Authors must live within a 150 radius of Memphis. Doesn't mean, though, that stories be set in Memphis or the Mid-South or that they be Southern-themed. Entries previously published are acceptable too, except in the case of stories that appeared in a national magazine with a circulation of 20,000 or more or in a publication within Shelby County.
Stories should be between 3,000 and 4,500 words long, and manuscripts should be double-spaced, with unstapled, numbered pages. Leave your name off the story itself, but do include a cover letter containing the following information: your name, address, and phone number and the title of the story.
Or stories. You may submit more than one. But each entry requires a $10 fee, payable by check or money order and made out to Memphis magazine.
Mailing address for manuscripts: Fiction Contest, c/o Memphis magazine, P.O. Box 1738, Memphis TN 38101. No entries by fax or email, please. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for each entry if you'd like your manuscript returned.
Winners will be contacted in late March or early April 2013.
The Memphis magazine fiction contest is co-sponsored by the Booksellers at Laurelwood and Burke's Book Store.
