Whalum sent out a letter Wednesday with comments collected from a meeting he hosted last week for teachers and others interested in the school system.
The list follows. The school board meets next Monday.
1) Rehiring of educational assistants
2) Reinstating corporal punishment into the classrooms
3) Removal of the "grade skipping" process and placing a strong teacher in each grade to work in a class with the students who are significantly struggling and facing failure (grade skipping- moving students from 3rd to 5th, 5th to 7th and so on)
4) Complete and current list of requirements needed for an individual to apply for any MCS position and a posting of the entire hiring process from beginning to end
5) Creation of a committee of retired teachers to advise and share with the school board
6) Restructuring Blue Ribbon
7) Elimination of block scheduling
8) Reduction of paperwork for teachers and administration
9) Streamline communication between district and teachers (information is incorrect once it travels through the ranks from the district to teachers)
10) Train administration (principals and assistant principals) on professionalism, conflict management, and sensitivity when interacting with teachers
11) More Performing Arts Schools and creation of off-site locations for performing arts students to engage in the academic pursuits
12) Connection between parental involvement in a child's school and the a parent's ability to receive government funds (suggestion: parents meet with social counselors to receive funds within the schools AFTER meeting with the teachers, principals, and any other school staff deemed necessary)
Note-the common responses to what teachers will do in order to effectuate change were as follows: continue to teach at a level of 100% and do whatever else needs to be done to help our children and this school system.
