Sometimes less is more with fresh seasonal produce, especially when cooking with flavorful heirloom tomatoes like these "Sweet Little Jollies." Don’t you love their cute little tails?
Tony and I stopped by The Pizza Shack on Summer. You have to look hard for it because it’s nestled next to Lowe’s on Perkins. A lovely young couple took over the place this spring, and folks were lined up for the Thursday night special (two 14-inch pizzas for $20). You can read more about it in an upcoming food news column in the Flyer.
But back to those tomatoes. I wanted something healthy to balance out the cheese in my pizza pie. So I cut my tomatoes in half, added thinly sliced radishes (also part of my CSA share), threw in all the fresh herbs I found the other day when I finally weeded my garden (basil, oregano, and Italian parsley) and tossed the salad with a very small amount of Newman’s Own balsamic vinaigrette. It was delicious and I came up with a new rule: Never skip the salad because you don’t have lettuce.
