On the Scene at the Signature Chefs Auction

While eating my way through Sunday’s March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction at the Racquet Club in East Memphis, I mixed up this recipe for a fun and happy fund-raiser.

Start off with a great dress like the one worn by honorary chair Jennifer Hobson. Here she is talking with Connie Loeb:

Next, toss in complimentary martinis, like these cranberry concoctions being sipped by LaDelle Lequerica and Katy Jenkins. (Courtney Jenkins opted for the wine.)

Add in the best of the city’s celebrity chefs like Karen Carrier, owner of Beauty Shop, Do, and Mollie Fontaine Lounge. Carrier served applewood-smoked salmon with mustard parsley honey glass and sun-dried cranberry and blueberry apricot chutney. There’s a garnish of citrus zest and toasted pine nuts too. Believe it or not, the dish tasted even better than its description sounds.

Inviting Kelly English, chef/owner of Midtown’s Iris Restaurant, is a good idea too. Here’s Kelly, waiting on his smoked salmon grilled cheese:

In all, 25 chefs from Memphis contributed their culinary talents to support the March of Dimes’ efforts in Memphis to help women and children. But they can’t cook up a fund-raiser without plenty of volunteer labor too. Volunteers transformed the Racquet Club’s indoor tennis courts into a lovely banquet setting.

All the servers at the event also volunteered. This is Scott Miller, with a tray of salmon mousse.

And here’s Daryl Moore with a tray of shrimp Florentine served over cheesy tomato grits, compliments of Paula Deen’s Buffet at Harrah’s Tunica Casino.
