Crave's Tasty Contest

Posted By on Sat, Mar 13, 2010 at 4:18 PM

When Jason Doty, owner of Crave Gourmet catering, began his monthly “Hand-Crafted Name” contest in February, the purpose of the name-that-dish competition was two-fold.

Doty opened Crave in January. For each event, Doty creates at least one dish designed specifically for the client.

And so the question kept coming up after these dishes were created: What do we call it?

Second, Doty is a big on supporting local businesses, so the contest — for which the winner receives a gift certificate to a locally owned restaurant — is his contribution to the “Break the Chain — Eat Local” movement. (More on that in a later post.)

According to Doty, response to the contest has been immense. He says that February’s contest brought 15,000 hits to Crave’s website.

“Chefs tend to over-elaborate,” he says when it comes to naming dishes. So the challenge is to be short and sweet and creative.

Last month’s winner was “Comfort Crisp,” which summed up one of Doty’s “inside-out” dishes, a play on the Waldorf chicken salad. The dish is chicken, Gruyere cheese, and toasted pecans served on an apple-honey crisp.

For March, the contest centers around a dessert that reinvents the truffle. It’s a raspberry covered in white chocolate topped in dark-chocolate ganache and served in an almond-cookie bowl.

The winner for March will receive a $30 gift certificate to Café Eclectic. You can enter as many names as you like. Deadline is midnight March 31st. The winner will be announced on April 1st.
