Saturday is the kick off for the Cooper Young Farmers Market, and local farmers and vendors will be on hand - rain or shine - from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of First Congregational Church.

Be sure to include the kids in the market, because they will be able to learn how to plant bean or basil seeds thanks to Sue Easley, who will be demonstrating in the market's activity tent beginning at 9 a.m. Demonstrations also are set for 11 a.m. and noon.

First CSA of the Season. Now What?

I picked up my first CSA of the season at yesterday's Memphis Botanic Garden Farmers Market. It's a half share from Whitton Farms.

Because I got there late, I missed the greens and was given a double helping of strawberries.

In the share: a small bag of shiitake mushrooms, eight sweet potatoes, about 4 pints of strawberries, fresh oregano, and plenty of radishes.

So what should I make?

Cooking With Sorrel: Something New

Posted By on Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 2:33 PM

Until I purchased a bundle at a recent farmers market, I though sorrel was the color of a horse. Turns out gray does play a role in the leafy green, but not immediately.

When it’s picked in April and May, sorrel is a beautiful spring green, and the leaves taste like lemon. But cook it into risotto like I did, the first time, and the color of the dish turns — to put it nicely — an unappetizing shade of brownish gray.

Coffee at Waffle House

I hate to admit this, but here goes: On a recent trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama, my first meal of the morning was at Waffle House.

It was early, I’m a coffee junkie, and the restaurant was right behind the condo, so in I went. But guess what?

Memphis Is Glamorous, According to Hamburger

Well, "glamorous" isn't the word I would use to describe Memphis, be it the city or the hamburger from the new Glamburger line from the Cheesecake Factory, but to each his own.

The Memphis burger (pictured top left) is a beef patty topped with shredded pork, melted cheddar, cole slaw, pickles, and mayonnaise.

Other place-inspired Glamburgers: Sonoma Burger (herbed goat cheese, mushrooms, oven-roasted tomatoes, arugula, red onion, and mayonnaise) and Monterey Cheeseburger (avocado, melted jack cheese, arugula, red onion, and honey-mustard mayonnaise).

Sheep-Pig and Other Odds and Ends

Surely you know of the sheep-pig? I learned of this fabulous creature earlier this week via The Awl.

When my coworker first saw sheep-pig, he thought exactly the same thing I did: "Looks delicious." (Yep, I'm a vegetarian, but I'd definitely considering eating a sheep-pig.)

As for the other food items, I've got rattling around ...

A few days ago, fresh from competing at Cochon 555, Restaurant Iris' Kelly English tweeted:

Dear Memphis: we are sorry we didn't win, but we have something HUGE in the works. It's time to show the world how great a food town we are.
9:08 PM Apr 18th via Echofon

I spoke with English today and asked what that something was. He said because he's still working out the details he wasn't ready to reveal the specifics, but he did offer a hint ...

Product Test: Papa Murphy's

As the guy behind the counter handed me my order, he asked "Have you baked with us before?"

The answer? No. That was my first time at the take-and-bake pizza chain Papa Murphy's in Germantown.

And now that I have baked with them, the question is: Will I bake with them again?
