That bag delivered at the end of the second episode of Memphis Beat ... anybody make out where it's from?

Greg Akers, who reviewed number two, quipped that it's from Cafe du Monde, a swipe at the show being filmed in New Orleans.

On the Scene at On the Rocks

Posted By on Mon, Jun 28, 2010 at 7:44 AM

My pal Mary and I went to the inaugural “Memphis on the Rocks” on South Main last Thursday night. It is one of the many events that Kim Hill, of The City Taste, has cooked up to showcase Memphis food and beverages. And it benefited the YWCA. Hard to argue with that.

Of course, the obvious pitfall of a beer/wine/liquor sampling event is the likelihood of strutting in sober and kneewalking out. Fortunately, there were giant buckets of bottled water, and Kim informed us at the door that there were shuttles available to take people home. Also, there was plenty of food to balance out the drinking: platters donated by local restaurants like Pearl’s, Tug’s, Silly Goose, Central Barbecue, and various arrangements catered by Chef Robert Hayes.

A Sneak Peek at Ferraro's Pizzeria and Pub

Posted By on Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 7:35 AM

Taking over the spot where the old High Point Pinch used to be, Ferraro’s Pizzeria and Pub brings an Italian flair to Uptown. They invited us to sample their menu items at a soft opening Wednesday (grand opening is Friday), and my colleagues and I were greeted by the lovely owner, Andrea Ferraro.

Link: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Beware Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle. The book, which chronicles Kingsolver and her family eating extremely locally for one year, can make you want to try crazy things, like raise your own turkeys or plant a vegetable garden when you already are juggling the bounty of a full-share CSA.

Of the latter, I'm referring to coworker Pam Denney, who broke ground on her raised-bed garden this spring. She's writing about the garden and related fare, from bugs to Crocs, in her charming new blog Pam Plants a Garden. You'll definitely want to bookmark it.

CSA, Week 8: Veggie Plate, Zucchini Bread, and Blueberry Pancakes

Posted By on Thu, Jun 24, 2010 at 7:24 AM

csa_week_8.JPG

Last week's CSA share from Whitton Farms was so plentiful that it took a little muscle to carry it to the car. Once the produce was spread out on my kitchen counter, it was both daunting and inspiring.

Peaches and three cups of blueberries were a nice addition to the bounty. On Father’s Day, I made a batch of “Dad’s Pancakes” for Tony, since I was the stand-in for our daughter who lives in Brooklyn. This recipe comes from my brother-in-law in Santa Fe. I think the original Dad was his friend’s father in Los Angeles, but regardless of where the recipe originated, these pancakes are the best I’ve ever eaten. (Big statement, but true). The special ingredients are lemon juice and vanilla.

Memphis Beat's Eats

People are acting like Memphis Beat punched their baby in the face. And while it's not the best thing I've ever seen, it's certainly not the worst, not even close.

But what I'm concerned with is how the show fared food- and drink-wise.

"We've been talking about it for over 2 years," says Rebecca Severs.

Severs owns Bari with her husband Jason, and in August, the couple are planning to open Three Angels Diner at the corner of Broad and Collins in Midtown.

Those 3 angels are the Severs' sons, and an impetus for this new venture.

A Fresh Start for CK's Coffee Shop

Posted By on Tue, Jun 22, 2010 at 5:44 PM

Randy Gross, a native of Chicago who's lived in Memphis for 5 years, has come to know the CK's Coffee Shop as a staple in the city.

Four months ago, Gross, along with his brother-in-law Jerry Vela, took over five CK's and is hoping to take control of the remaining 6, and one of the first orders of business was replacing the coffee as well as the coffee machines.

But Gross is not out to completely change CK's as much as spiff it up. "I want to rebuild the mindset as a place that's safe and clean with great food and good value."

Lunch at Brushmark

Posted By on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 11:09 AM

The Brushmark has introduced its new lunch menu for the summer, and a few coworkers and I went to check it out.

Eating lunch at The Brushmark is a delight — not only because the restaurant is conveniently located, with plenty of parking, and has natural light pouring through its giant windows, but also because walking through the Brooks to get to The Brushmark makes me feel like I’m stealing away from work for more than just lunch.

And their new summer menu makes them even more enticing.

We started off with some simple salads ($4) ...

The blackberry vine in my yard looks particularly promising this year. I've had a handful of ripe berries so far, I'm hoping I can get to the rest before the birds.

Any ideas on keeping them away?

CSA Week 7: Baby Carrots, Quiche, and Squash Casserole

Posted By on Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 9:07 AM

I think I’m in a CSA rut, and it’s only week 7.

I started last week’s cooking with 15 yellow squash. They took up half of the vegetable bin. Yesterday, after I put away this week’s CSA, I had 14 yellow squash in the same space. They just keep coming.

Today, a couple of coworkers and I stopped by the Rumba Room on South Main for lunch.

To start, we sampled the guacamole and the Margarita Dip. (Both dips: $4.)
