Earlier in the week, a friend mentioned that Forty Carrots, the East Memphis kitchenwares store, had closed.
I stopped by the store, and, sure enough, it was empty.

What a shame. Forty Carrots not only had just about every tool you could ever need for cooking, owners Phyllis and Chuck Cline were generous in providing advice and answering questions.
While I was outside the store, a passerby stopped and said that it had closed about six weeks ago and that Phyllis had secured a booth at a "whole food" market to sell Forty Carrots coffee and prepared foods.
My attempts to reach Phyllis have been unsuccessful, but if I hear back, I'll post an update.

I took a cooking course from Phyllis years ago (not that I remember anything she taught me, like how to bone a whole chicken). She's a sharp cookie. I hope she lands on her feet.
Gourmet and kitchen gadget stores don't have a good record in Memphis. I can think of several that came and went. Why is that?
My mom stopped by there as they were moving out and the "whole food" market is the Midtown Farmers Market at 1632 Union. They also assured her that they will honor the gift certificate I had just bought her.
Ahh, sorry to hear that. I used to run a guitar shop around the corner and those were two very nice folks indeed, and a cool store.
I'll sure to go by the new location.
