Hoarders

As previously noted, the Flyer offices had a clean-up day last week.

My area is one of the office's most notable pig-sty: papers and CDs with pictures, little Post-It notes with phones numbers once very important but long forgotten.

I did a lot of tossing last week but a lot of saving as well ... as something in one of those piles might, just might, come in handy one day.

It's an affliction that follows me home, illustrated so perfectly in the Vegetarian Times magazines I've kept from 2004 that are now mildewing in storage.

I've seen that show Hoarders, and I think that I may be only years away from the decomposing-cat-under-a mountain-of-crap scenario. Good thing I don't have any cats.

The reason I'm holding on to those Vegetarian Times is that I plan to go through them and clip recipes. I also have stacks of Bon Appetit and Cook's Illustrated with recipes that call out to me. On top of that are the food issues of The Oxford American and Ready Made with projects that remain undone.

Disturbing, yes, but as Hoarders attests, I'm not alone ... and then there's The Bitten Word.

I happened upon this blog a few months ago. It follows a Washington, D.C., couple who have vowed to address their stack of cooking magazines by making one recipe from every magazine.

In June, the pair tackled a recipe from Saveur trying to approximate Gus's Fried Chicken.

So, good for them. Anybody else out there hoarding cooking magazines?
