Gingerbread Dream at the Memphis Botanic Garden

This afternoon, I went to the Memphis Botanic Garden just as volunteers were putting the finishing touches on "Gingerbread Dream."

The exhibit opens Thursday and features a wild array of structures comprised of gingerbread, icing, candy, cereal, and cookies. It was designed by architect John Pruett and inspired by Gaudi and Dr. Seuss, which means it's brilliantly elaborate. The houses are "leased" by area businesses with funds going to Camp Good Grief, a non-profit helping kids cope with losing a loved one.

It's Alive!: Live Burger at Balewa's Vegan Gourmet

If I'm at Sean's Cafe, I'm getting the outstanding falafel sandwich. I can't remember ordering anything else there — though I've long been intrigued by the Live Burger offered by the Balewa's Vegan Gourmet side of the business.

So, I ordered one and wasn't sorry one bit.

Upper Crust's Name Change

The Upper Crust, the meat-and-three restaurant on Cleveland, has changed/is changing to Just Heavenly.

It's a bit confusing because the signage and restaurant receipts still read "Upper Crust," but basically, it's now Just Heavenly.

I was told the name change was planned since the restaurant was bought from the original owners a year ago October.

Anyway ... the reason I was at Upper Crust/Just Heavenly was that the recent change in the weather has had me craving vegetable plates, and more specifically, lima beans.

Winter Farmers Market Begins Saturday

The winter farmers market is returning to the parking lot of Tsunami in Cooper-Young. The market will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Van Cheeseman of Flora at Bluebird Farms says vendors include Shoaf's Loaf, Dodson's Farms, Evergreen Farms, Newman Farms (famous for their Berkshire pork), and Bonnie Blue Farm.

Eat for Bad Dog and Other Things To Do

Thursday is Dog Day, a fund-raiser for Rock 103 DJ John "Bad Dog" McCormack, who is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia.

A number of restaurants and other businesses are donating a portion of the day's proceeds to help cover Bad Dog's expenses. Among the restaurants: Young Avenue Deli, River Oaks, East End Grill, The Cottage, and the Half Shell.

Donations are also being accepted through the Friends of Bad Dog website. You can check the website as well for a full list of participating businesses.

And there are more items for your to-do list, including a wine dinner, voting, and beer-making ...
