On Thursday, March 3rd, Joe's Wine & Liquors will host its "Bang for Your Buck" wine tasting at Playhouse on the Square. All wines at the tasting are priced under $20.

"It's the perfect opportunity to taste what you normally wouldn't," says Joe's general manager (and Flyer wine columnist) Michael Hughes.

Hughes describes the tasting as casual and non-regimented, the better for patrons to sample the 40-plus wines to be showcased.

"There will be wines from all over the world — South America, South Africa, Australia, Washington and Oregon states. There will be whites and reds, and roses, for good measure," Hughes says.

"It runs the gamut to light and refreshing to full-bodied," he adds.

Of the wines at the tasting, Hughes points to the Porcupine Ridge Syrah and the Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris as among his favorites.

"The Porcupine Ridge Syrah is kind of gamey, meaty, and smokey. It's a nice blend of Old World and New World," Hughes says. "The Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris is unlike any Pinot Gris. It has a nutty, pear-melon thing going. It's so drinkable."

All the wines at the tasting will be available for purchase at a discount at the event and can be picked up at Joe's in a day or two.

"It's nice to taste the wine," Hughes says, "before you buy."

Bang For Your Buck: Best Wines Under $20 at Playhouse on the Square, Thursday, March 3rd, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and available at Joe's.
