The Royal Wedding

Posted By on Fri, Apr 29, 2011 at 1:45 PM

At lunch today at the Blue Monkey, Greg ordered the Beef Eater in honor of the newlyweds.

It's prime rib with melted swiss on sourdough, served with a side of "Tiger" sauce ($9).

(For the record, this is always what Greg orders.)

Majestic Grille

Posted By on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 1:26 PM

I have a coworker who, some years ago, had a very unpleasant time at a local restaurant, which eventually led him to saying to his server, "F—- you," and, yelling now, "F—- this place!"

What has always stunned me about this story is that this person still frequents this restaurant.

None of this has anything at all to do with my recent lunch at Majestic Grille.

At the Food Truck Fare

Posted By on Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 2:41 PM

I arrived at the Food Truck Fare at 11:40 a.m., which I thought was plenty early enough to grab some grub and hurry back to the office. But the line at the Fuel Cafe truck was really long. I waited in this line for about an hour.

Dig out your pants with the elastic waist ... this is a big week food-wise.

• But first, give a little support for the South Memphis Farmers Market and GrowMemphis, two groups dedicated to eradicating food insecurity. On Friday, April 15th, at the University of Memphis' Rose Theatre, there's a concert benefitting both of them. There will be live music of all sorts. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. It starts at 5 p.m.

Now, let's dig in.

Easter Candy

I was in Walgreens yesterday doing a little Peeps browsing because I had decided that I wanted to do some diorama dabbling that would most certainly be based on this and I was thinking about construction paper and foil and glue and then reality set in, because really. In any case, Walgreens had only the chick Peeps and clearly this operation calls for bunny Peeps.

So I turned my attention to Easter candy in general.

New pavillion at the Memphis Farmers Market
  • New pavillion at the Memphis Farmers Market

Loads of food-related things to do this week, and I hope to post a round-up later, but one of the biggies is the opening of the Memphis Farmers Market, this Saturday, April 16th.

This year's market features an expanded covered pavilion area at Central Station. It's open from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through mid-October.

Other opening dates for farmers markets:

The Elegant Farmer

Posted By on Thu, Apr 7, 2011 at 9:14 AM

Hannah, Pam, and I met up at the Elegant Farmer yesterday for what turned out to be an epic lunch.

The restaurant, at the old site of Crumpets on Highland, is owned by Mac Edwards, formerly of McEwen's on Monroe. Edwards uses ingredients from many local sources, including Micmak Farms, Jones Orchard, and Newman Farm.

Hannah was immediately smitten because the drinks came with bendy straws.

Kabob International

Posted By on Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 10:35 AM

So many things on Kabob International's menu looked so good — the grilled falafel salad, the dolma, the sampler plate with hummus and baba ganoush, and so on. But it wasn't hard to decide at all.

The veggie kabob on pita ($6.99) with a side order of tabouli ($4.95).

Oh my! The kabob — with grilled peppers, zucchini, and onions and served on a fresh pita bread and dressed with tzatziki sauce — was everything I could have wanted and the fragrant tabouli was just the right companion.
