Evelyn & Olive

I was mad mad mad when my colleagues went to lunch at the newly opened Jamaican/Southern restaurant Evelyn & Olive without me.

I'm sure I'll get over it someday. In any case, they enjoyed it enough to want to go back.

The vibe is nice and relaxed. The staff is friendly.

Hannah got a sorrel drink mixed with Sprite ($2.95). This one's hard to describe — not-too-sweet, a little spicy and earthy.

We shared both the Jama Jama (above, $2.95) and the rice and peas ($2.95).

Jama Jama is a sauteed spinach dish. The menu says it includes parmesan, garlic, and a bit of cayenne. I detected something sweet as well. Some recipes include nutmeg, which may be it.

I got the Rasta Pasta ($7.95), which is a very good, pasta primavera-ish dish with a little bit of broccoli and peppers.

Hannah ordered the Marley Meal ($6.95), a combo platter of sorts that includes cabbage that's sauteed with Jamaican spices, rice and peas, and a cucumber and tomato salad.

The cabbage was the favorite at the previous visit. I can see why. I'm a fan of sauteed cabbage, but I've never had it like this before. This dish was complex, almost buttery.
