Music fans, mark your calendars for these upcoming dinners:
A Heart Full of Soul at the Napa Cafe on August 19th and 20th, benefiting the Stax Music Academy.
A Fine Country Dinner at Whitton Farms in Tyronza, Arkansas, on September 9th, benefiting the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home Project.
The six-course Heart Full of Soul dinners have soul-themed dishes — pork belly, fried green tomato, and biscuit with sage and blackberry jam, for example — to be accompanied by live performances from the Stax Academy of songs by Stax greats like Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the MGs, and Wilson Pickett.
Guests will also be sampling nine wines from the Wine Market and chocolates created by P. Ashley Rix of Chocistry.
The dinners start with a 6:30 p.m. reception and cost $125. For reservations, call 683-0441. Full menu here.
The Fine Country Dinner at Whitton Farms will be a whole hog roast with all the "fixins." But, vegetarians, don't despair, among those scheduled to cook is Justin Fox Burks, aka the Chubby Vegetarian.
Others working the event: Kelly English of Restaurant Iris, Felicia Willett of Felicia Suzanne's, Doug Hollis of Trolley Stop Market, Mac Edwards of the Elegant Farmer, and Miles McMath of St. Jude.
The event will also include farm tours, a Ghost River beer tasting, live music, a silent auction, a talk about the history of the Delta, and more.
The Johnny Cash Boyhood Home Project involves restoring Cash's boyhood home and creating a museum in honor of the singer. It is included within a larger project by Arkansas State University to develop Dyess, Arkansas, into a heritage tourism site.
