Blues City Hot Dogs

Nine times out of 10, if there's a dish with "Elvis" in the name, it's going to involve peanut butter and bananas.

Here's the 10th: the Elvis Dog at Blues City Hot Dog, which opened 3 weeks ago on Highland.

From the ground up, the Elvis Dog is a hot dog bun topped with pancakes — pancakes! — then a Nathan's All Beef hot dog, then bacon.

A dousing of the Elvis Dog with syrup is optional. And, yes, of course, we opted for the syrup.

The Elvis Dog is but one of Blues City's offerings that stretch the beyond the chilli, cheese, relish line. Among the 10 dogs on the menu are the Grizzly Dog featuring cheese grits and the Bourbon Street Dog topped with Cajun shrimp.

Then there's the Southwestern Dog with guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos, spicy mustard, and Fritos.

I got the West Coast Wonder Dog, a vegetarian hot dog dressed with avocado, tomato, shredded lettuce, and spicy mustard. Very good.

Now classics are classics for a reason, which leads to the chilli and cheese topped Classic American Dog and perhaps the happiest customer at our table.

We all ordered combos, which comes with a drink and a side. Sides include coleslaw, potato salad, seasoned pickles, or chips. The four meals together came to about $30.

At the back of the restaurant is a wall where customers are encouraged to sign their names. Like the syrup, we opted for that too.

Blues City Hot Dogs is open daily for lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
