• The heritage-breed pig-boosting Cochon 555 has announced its 2013 tour schedule.
Memphis will not be included in the main Cochon 555 tour as it was last year, but will be the site once again of the Heritage BBQ event Labor Day weekend.
• Included in Best Food Writing 2012 compilation is this Garden & Gun story by Wright Thompson, "Memphis in May: Pork-palooza."
The story follows the highly pedigreed Fatback Collective during its first year competing in the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
For the record, I found the notion of the team "fixing" the barbecue contest and Thompson's tone fairly obnoxious.
• Of course, there are bacon-flavored candy canes.
• The latest season of BBQ Pitmasters begins on Sunday, December 16th.

From the Feb 13, 1997 issue, Leonard Gill's feature on the book InterCourses: an aphrodisiac cookbook by Memphian Martha Hopkins and her Texas pal Randall Lockridge and featuring blush-inducing photographs by Ben Fink.
From the story:
Hopkins recalls: "Randall and I spent many hours on the phone saying, `Asparagus. Asparagus. What can we do with asparagus?'" (The answer? A topless female model in a hip-hugging micro-mini of asparagus stalks.) For the lead image illustrating chocolate, "the idea was to drizzle chocolate all over the model, but when we did that it looked like we'd stabbed him. So somebody said, `Hey, let's smear it on him.' So we hand-smeared it."

Yes, I'm a Christmas creep. It can be a difficult holiday for the impatient cynic.
On the other end of the spectrum is Lauren of the really fun, pancake-riffic blog Pancake Palate. She spent the day after Thanksgiving making adorable holiday pancakes. The cute snowman at left is hers. The scarf is ham!
And here's more holiday cheer in the form of gifts from the gifted: hot chocolate pops from Runaway Spoon and "White Gold" snack mix from the Chubby Vegetarian.

Have you voted in the Best of Memphis reader's poll yet?
And, speaking of best ... someone's started a blog devoted to finding the Best Memphis Burger.
And, yes, I have something to add ...

A couple of pizza-related items from local blogs:
From the new food blog by artists Mel and Bobby Spillman, Spillmanville Eats: a recipe for low-carb pizza.
The spit-your-drink-out-funny Yeah, and another thing has a craving for pizza, but "Not REAL pizza."
And, two more things I'd like to share from these blogs ...

Two items that would most certainly be included if my pretend blog pigautopsy.com actually existed:
The new blog Hard Corps Food, devoted to charcuterie.
And Thomas, over at Eat Local Memphis, is lost in his own Newman Farms-induced reverie.

I thought the first season of the set-in-Memphis-filmed-in-New-Orleans, Elvis-impersonator/cop dramady was awful, but I know the guys over at Sing All Kinds are excited about the show's return.
And, in case they get hungry, allrecipes.com has some menu ideas.

From the always informative, beer-centric site Fuzzy Brew: How new legislation on high-alcohol beer may impact Ghost River.
And from The Runaway Spoon, who says this is a snap: Baked Ricotta and Goat Cheese with Candied Tomatoes.

The state of Tennessee is represented by Memphis BBQ, which has made it to week three defeating Kentucky's fried chicken and Louisiana's crawfish.
BBQ is now up against Texas jalapenos ... and currently behind roughly 700 votes.
Memphis, we can't let jalapenos beat bbq! Vote now.
Voting ends today at 5 p.m.

Anthony Bourdain on Elvis and James Beard: Elvis and James Beard. White. Fat. Despicable. isolated. Gluttonous. Surrounded by sycophants. Beard House=Graceland of food.
VampILoveMem on restaurateur Ben Vaughn, who recently closed El Diablo and Au Fond: Ben Vaughn should own a food truck. Then he could close his restaurant every evening and reopen a new one in the morning.

A few more worth sharing:
Memphis Is Not So Bad: When the author of this blog gets fed up with Memphis, she gets herself fed at local restaurants.
Memphis Foodie: Another blog focused on eating out. This writer says she's "not a picky eater."
And ...
Dinner Belles: A collective effort with posts about cooking, dining out, gardening, and more. This one's graphic-tastic.

Flyer sister publication Memphis magazine has a new site and with it Memphis Stew a new food blog by my friend and colleague Pam Denney.
Pam is a frequent contributor to Hungry Memphis and is the food editor of Memphis magazine. The new Stew will cover eating, cooking, and growing food in Memphis.
I've already picked up two cool cooking tips.

Memphis-made Lazy Cakes have made it on to NPR's "All Things Considered." Included in the report is this exciting development: "Relaxing folks is going so well for the makers of Lazy Cakes, they'll soon launch a product with the opposite effect: caffeinated brownies called 'Up Cakes.'"

Currence, a 2009 James Beard award-winner, is also set to compete at Cochon 555 in New Orleans in May.

Ryan Trimm of Sweet Grass is up for Food & Wine magazine's The People's Best New Chef, Southeast category.
Readers vote online, choosing among 10 chefs from 10 regions. Trimm is the only Memphis chef nominated (and he faces stiff competition from Atlanta chef and Top Chef favorite Kevin Gillespie).
Voting begins today and runs through March 1st.
