Council Committee Approves Bass Pro Extension

Posted by Mary Cashiola on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 11:55 AM

The City Council's Housing and Community Development committee this morning approved extending Bass Pro Shops' lease on the Pyramid for an additional three months.

Bass Pro has been paying the city $35,000 a month while it does its due diligence on the facility, but the lease is set to expire at the end of December.

"I think we're down to insurance issues and structural integrity issues," Housing and Community Development head Robert Lipscomb told the committee.

Council member Barbara Swearengen Ware asked when the Bass Pro project might be a reality and Lipscomb said it would take at least another six to eight months.

"I have to say be patient. We don't have a viable alternative," Lipscomb said. "Second, the payoff is so huge it will be worth the wait. ... We're going to try to get this thing done with all deliberate speed. We're down to the flood wall and seismic issues but we hope to get them resolved by the first quarter of next year."

@urbanut: I believe the city press conference kicking off/celebrating the BPS Pyramid store was in 2005.

GULP. Robert and the rest down there - quit fooling around and admit that BassPro boys have ya'll over the proverbial barrel and are getting ready to stick it to Memphis. Downtown projects are for gov-mint money, hands in the till, good ole boy-ism, pat my back and I'll give you a BassPro fly rod somewhere uncomfortable. Hehehehe Golly durn, jis look at what can happen. A big ole bass in the shape of a pyramid...let's go in, Terrel. Dummies.

The lease was extended for 3 months, but no results are expected for 6 to 8 months? Is it just me or does that seem odd?

Why wasn't some sort of punitive fee for extensions put in the contract?

Supreme Leader Lipscomb has spoken... take no notice of the Man Behind the Curtain. Supreme Leader Lipscomb counsels patience: verily, the Giant Bass approacheth from beyond the minnow bucket of Space and Time.

It reminds me of the old blacklight poster from the 1970s -- the one with the two vultures saying, "Patience, my A**! I'm gonna kill something!"

Minnow bucket? It's not Crappie Pro Shops.

Or maybe it is.

City of Memphis comes right out and says "Well we don't have any other options." I wonder why Bass Pro thinks they can do whatever they want?

Crappie is far better eating than bass.

Um. Miss Mary. I hate to burst your bubble, but I accidentally commented on an article in the The Flyer from 2004 talking about a BPS or Caballa's-Cabella's-Whatever. I thought it was current...ha....silly me thinking a biiiiiiggggg ol' idea like that could happen so quick like. You may be "technically" right, but BPS has been tossed around for AT least 5 years tomorrow.
