Continuing Campaign Rollout, Wharton Opens HQ, Names Co-Chairs

Posted by Jackson Baker on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 2:03 AM

UPDATE: Four days after pulling his petition and two days after a ceremonial opening of his headquarters, A C Wharton planned to officially file his petition at the Election Commission Monday morning.

Continuing a roll-out week that began with his drawing a petition to run for Memphis mayor on Thursday, Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton opened his campaign headquarters before a large crowd of supporters at the Eastgate shopping center on Saturday, simultaneously announcing six “co-chairs” of his campaign.

As described in Wharton’s accompanying press release, they are:

- Darrell Cobbins - owner of Universal Commercial and community volunteer
and activist.

- Tomeka Hart - Memphis City School Board Commissioner (District 7) and
President/CEO of the Memphis Urban League.

- Ray Peterson, Sr. - minister of South Parkway Church of Christ.

- Lois Stockton - owner of the Nail Station and community volunteer and
activist.

- Jim Strickland - Memphis city councilman (District 5) and local attorney.

- Jose Velazquez - former executive director of Latino Memphis and deputy
director of national council of La Raza's affiliate services.

Departing from his usual low-key manner, Wharton worked up to a passionate conclusion of his remarks to a large crowd of supporters at his Eastgate headquarters opening on Saturday.

Anybody but Herenton; glad he's gone.

AC is WW without the overblown ego. Now that Herenton has passed the baton to Wharton, it's clear that nothing much will change after the special election. Wharton may be a less-threatening candidate to the East Memphis devils, but he'll push for consolidation just as hard as WW did. Now that he doesn't need suburban voters, his true colors will show.

Wow, Bob. That's some of the best disguised racism I've seen in quite a while. Do you happen to have any evidence of his "true colors", or did you just come to call your fellow Memphians a bunch of devils?

AC's stance on consolidation is funny since we never heard his forceful plea on the subject during both runs for county mayor. I chalk it up to him being more of a politician than anything else.

Let's not forget the ultimate puppeteer, Bobby Lanier, and his minions the developers who created the sprawl first in Hickory Hill and then in Cordova. If anyone thinks that A C is not in their pockets they are delusional. Lanier has been the kingmaker for years from Bill Morris to Jim Rout and ultimately to A C Wharton. He personally picked A C to run for County Mayor.

Doesn't matter who he puts up as "Co-Chairs" they are merely their as attention getters. And, A C's record on personnel appointments is just as filled with cronies and relatives of politicians, etc. as Herenton's was, maybe worse, but no one reported it. They will all move over to high paid do nothing positions in the City when he is elected.
