Shelby GOP Celebrates Christmas — and its Good Political Fortune

But, as was the case with the Democrats earlier last week, a Christmas Party is, finally, mainly a party, not a political event.

Following by a few days the Shelby County Democrats' Christmas Party, the Shelby County Republicans held theirs on Sunday, at the Devonshire Clubhouse, just off Poplar Avenue in Germantown.

As befits the more suburban character of the GOP celebration, the gathered Republicans were perhaps a tad less exuberant (no attempts at Karaoke, for example), but, as county Republican chairman Justin Joy noted in his remarks to the faithful, Republicans have a lot to be satisfied about — including, as Joy pointed out, a brand-new victory in Louisiana, where Congressman Bill Cassidy of the GOP ousted Democratic incumbent Mary Landrieu from her U.S. Senate seat.

Also pointed out by several of the attendees was the fact that — unlike their Democratic counterparts, who are in the process of looking for a new state chair — the state Republican executive committee had on Satuday, meeting in Nashville,  elected its current chair, Chris Devaney, to a third consecutive term.

But, all things considered, the gathering Sunday was less a political event than it was a party, pure and simple. In that sense, the Republicans on Sunday had something in common with the Democrats on Thursday night.

'Tis the season, after all. Check out the Slideshow.
