A planned mural outside the new Facing History & Ourselves office in the South Main Arts District will feature portraits of Memphians who have taken positive action in the face of injustice.

The international nonprofit education organization has dubbed these people Memphis "upstanders," and they're seeking ideas from the public for which upstanders to include in their mural.

Facing History has teamed up with the Urban Art Commission to collect submissions for who should be depicted. Those will be accepted online from February 3rd through the 29th. They'll seek a local artist for the project in March.

“Facing History seeks to inspire the upstanders of tomorrow by acknowledging the amazing contributions of those who have come before us,” says Marti Tippens Murphy, executive director of Facing History and Ourselves’ Memphis chapter. “Our mural will serve as an ongoing tribute to the courage and conscience of these heroes — and a challenge to future generations.”
