The weekend's box office numbers are in from BoxOfficeMojo, and if you had Hannah Montana: The Movie in your office pool, congratulations! The hotly anticipated (from the tween set) big-screen feature from Miley Cyrus grabbed hold of #1 with $34 million, kicking last week's winner, Fast and Furious, to the curb. One can only hope this means we haven't seen the last of Miley Cyrus. Oh wait, I mean the opposite of that.
Fast and Furious did manage a $28.7 million dollar gross in its second week, bringing its overall domestic take to $118 million, thus ensuring we ain't seen the last of Vin Diesel behind the wheel in a souped-up action movie. In unrelated news, John Cheever is still dead.
In third was the 3D animated kids' flick Monsters Vs. Aliens, with a $22.6 million take in its third week. Of local interest with Monsters Vs. Aliens is that all 3D glasses for the DreamWorks film were manufactured by Bartlett company American Paper Optics (APO). In the Spring issue of the Flyer's sister publication Memphis Business Quarterly is a profile of APO. Read all about it here.
In fourth was the Seth Rogen vehicle Observe and Report. Read Chris Herrington's take on the dark comedy here.
Rounding out the top 5: Nic Cage's end-of-the-world tilt, Knowing. Apparently, even on Easter weekend—maybe especially on—do people want to see the planet wiped out and all human life extinguished. Feel good movie of the year?
