Oscar Watch/"Julie & Julia"

Posted By on Fri, Aug 7, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Back in June the Academy Awards announced the doubling of Best Picture nominees to 10, beginning with this year's race. Ever ready to think about such things, I gave out my predictions for this year's class of Best Pic nominees.

They were:
Up
Nine
The Informant
The Road
Where the Wild Things Are
Amelia
Brothers
The Lovely Bones
Avatar
The Human Factor (now apparently retitled Invictus)

Why not update that list?

Since then, I've seen (and reviewed) Julie & Julia, opening today, and saw The Hurt Locker (Chris Herrington's review). Both of these films appear, at this early juncture, to be locks for nominations.

So, if I'm adding those two to the list, obv. two gotta go. I've now seen the trailer for The Informant, and though it looks like it could be quite fun and has the talents of past Oscar winners Steven Soderbergh and Matt Damon, it doesn't look like Best Pic material. Trailers can be deceiving, of course. But it's being put before the "voting public" in the Death Valley of September. Not feelin' it.

The Informant trailer:

For removal #2, I'm just going to have to just go with my prodigious gut here and remove Brothers. It's got Oscar-bait talent in plot (returning military personnel and the home front) filmmaker (Jim Sheridan), and actors (Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tobey Maguire). But it looks like three movies (drama, romance, horror) in one, and could fall flat. Sorry Brothers. Yanking you out. (Avatar, you're on notice.)

Brothers trailer:

The List 2.0:
Up
Julie & Julia
The Hurt Locker
Nine
The Road
Where the Wild Things Are
Amelia
The Lovely Bones
Avatar
Invictus/The Human Factor
