St. Agnes (Red)
Julia, Junior (Captain)
Malcolm, Senior (Captain)
The Game: Though low-scoring, the contest was close and certainly in contention until the end. Neither team was proficient with bonuses (St. Agnes 2 for 9, Craigmont 0 for 9) but made up for it with efficient toss-up answering in the first two rounds. The Lightning Round saw more missed questions, but certainly Craigmont was playing catch up and feeling the need to buzz in even when they didn't know the answer.
St. Agnes advances to play the winner of St. Mary's/Munford.
For the Record: I picked St. Agnes over Ripley, who was originally slated for this game instead of Craigmont.
For Craigmont, Malcolm is going to MIT and is the vice president of the Art Club. (Does he cast the tiebreaking vote when Monet vs. Manet is debated?) Arthur will be a Georgetown Hoya.
Jeremy says he wants to be an astronaut. Later in the program, one of the answers is Alan Shepard (the greatest of all American astronauts, IMHO). Host Jim Jaggers tells Jeremy he'll meet Shepard soon enough. Er, I hope not — Shepard died almost 12 years ago.
Malaprostagisms: Carboxylic acid, Gagarin, quadrilaterals, Saad Hariri, Ritau, Konstantin Feoktistov, Yves Leterme
This week we learned that Ranta is past president and past executive director of the Southern States Communication Association. The SSCA is "one of the grand divisions of the National Communication Association," Ranta says. With over 1,000 members, the SSCA convention is coming to Memphis in April. Y'all.
Objection, Your Honor: A wrong answer was apparently written on Jaggers' card, at one point in the game. For a question about what walled Canadian city Benedict Arnold attacked, Jaggers said the answer was Toronto, and Dr. Ranta corrected with Quebec.
At another point in the game, Malcolm gives the answer "alliteration," which he's told is wrong but which is actually right. Inconceivably ill-inculcated incorrect information!
