When we last spoke with local musician/songwriter Robby Grant (of Vending Machine, Mouserocket, etc.) in November, he was gearing up for the release of the latest Vending Machine effort, Let The People Sing and looking forward to getting back in the studio. This week Grant caught us up on what he's been up to since.

Flyer: So, how have things been going with Vending Machine?

Grant: We played a few shows here and there but have mainly been recording. I've got three finished new songs and we're going to be going into the studio in next month or so. We've been testing them out live and been pretty happy.

I also got a new 8-track recorder in January and have been making a lot of new sounds. It's is taking me back to cassette 4-tracking days. I just started a new website (http://SongsFromSunspots.com) where I'll be giving away stuff I'm working on. It ranges from sketches to finished songs. Look for a new song every few days.

Also, we did a video with Sarah Fleming at Live From Memphis for the song "Moments." It features mind-bending artwork from Jay Crum.

You recently added Mark Stuart (Pawtuckets, One Four Fives bassist) to the Vending Machine mix on guitar/keys. How has it worked out?

Totally radical. He was the missing corner piece of the Vending Machine musical puzzle.

What's up with Mouserocket?

Alicja (Trout, Mouserocket member) was down at South By Southwest in Austin talking to some folks about what's next for our record, which will hopefully be out in the next few months. An Italian label is putting out a 7" of 3 songs this summer as well. We haven't been playing much recently but do have a couple of shows scheduled for April.

We also went ahead and did a video for "Take More," directed by Chuck Vicious.

Do you do many shows on the road these days?

Nah, just Midtown. I hope to do some in the fall with either band.

Is there anything else that you're working on or excited about?

I'm really excited about recording with Vending Machine and the new website stuff. I've also been working with Dave Shouse and James Godwin on a new noise band thing. Super out there!

Also, Shoulder Tap Records is going to do a digital release this summer of my first solo record, Unleavened Bread (originally released on Yep Roc).
