Harold Ford Checks in for Big Media

Posted By on Wed, May 26, 2010 at 7:24 PM

Columnist Josh Silver launched a broadside at former 9th District Congressman Harold Ford on Huffington Post today. An excerpt:

This week, Harold Ford, Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, showed how completely the DLC is captured by industry money, why the US congress is mired in gridlock, and why the government continues to protect the American public: from oil spills to banking crises to mining disasters, and now to the Internet. Big money lobbyists and their puppet politicians' blind abandonment of reasonable government oversight.

Harold Ford is one of those puppets ...

Who Were the West Memphis Cop Killers?

Posted By on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 2:54 PM

Relatives have identified the two men who shot and killed two West Memphis police officers during a traffic stop yesterday as Jerry Kane, 45, and his son, Joseph, 16. Both Kanes were killed in a subsequent shoot-out with police at the West Memphis Wal-Mart 90 minutes later.

Some television reports yesterday stated that the Kanes were Hispanic. They are Caucasian and originally from Ohio. But mysteries abound about father and son. What were they up to? Why would they resist a routine traffic stop with gunfire? Was there something in their van? Explosives? Money? Drugs? Or was it just anti-government paranoia that reached a boiling point?

Jerry Kane traveled the country "giving lectures" about how to avoid "mortgage fraud." At least, that's the rationale given at this rather bizarre website. Some of the links on the site are to such things as "Patriot Radio" and other right-wing media outlets. It appears to be an anti-federal government-themed site.

On the opening page, Jerry Kane and his son, Joseph, are lionized as follows by "Angela": I first met Joe Kane when he was 14. He was a sweet, loving young man with a charming demeanor and a warm smile. Joe had a a brilliant mind and quick wit, like his Father. Joe was also blessed with healing hands and he was always willing to help those in need whenever asked. Not into gangs, rap music, or drugs, he was a well rounded, wholesome young man with a healthy outlook and a golden future. Jerry and Joe were cleancut and admired by everyone that made their acquaintance, not only for their knowledge and understanding of the foreclosure scam, but for their moral ethics and integrity.

Together they educated the people about the Mortgage Fraud and how to fight to keep their homes.

Joe adored his father and was always at his side. This was a terrible tragedy for all involved in what occurred on I-40 and I hope and pray that the truth about what really happened will be revealed.
Angela

There's more: Jerry Kane and his beautiful son Joe (age 16) were shot to death during an alleged traffic stop by law enforcement on Thursday, May 20th, 2010. Jerry, Joe and their two dogs, while on their way back to their home in Florida have been made out to be everything from drug smugglers to hispanics, which we all know is typical of the media spinners. The police said it was a traffic stop. But their van had more bullet holes in it than Bonnie and Clyde's.

Jerry and Donna Lee were just married three months ago. Jerry spoke of ending his travelling to give classes and seminars across the country and was looking forward to staying close to home and enjoying his new life in Florida. They were happy.

Last month, Jerry was stopped on I-40 in New Mexico and arrested for not having a driver's license. He recently completed his administrative process for the unlawful arrest.

Coincidence?
I-40 sounds like the good ole boy stretch-of-highway, where if they spot you, and they already don't like you, you could get killed. Even if you are just a Dad and son with your two dogs on your way home, minding your own business.

Let's face it. If there wasn't a "traffic stop" no one would be dead!

That's true. It's also true that if the Kanes hadn't shot and killed two police officers during a traffic stop, four people wouldn't be dead today.

I have to believe there is much, much more going to come out about the Kanes and their organization in the next few days. There is strangeness here, indeed. Nothing makes sense. Yet.

Update: Here's a recent radio interview with Jerry Kane, in which he describes his arrest in New Mexico and his "philosophy."

Herenton Fears Debate Will be Unfair; Withdraws

Posted By on Wed, May 12, 2010 at 2:48 PM

On the WREG Channel 3 website today, it was announced that former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton had withdrawn from a scheduled debate with his Democratic primary opponent for Congress, Steve Cohen. Herenton told Channel 3 he objected to two of the panelists who would be asking questions: WREG commentator Norm Brewer and Commercial Appeal editorial page editor Otis Sanford.

Herenton committed to the debate last September, but has had a change of heart, telling Channel 3 that he didn't think Brewer or Sanford would be "fair" with him.

This makes me unable to resist pulling out the Saturday Night Live routine, "Really?"

Really, Willie? Are you worried that they might "unfairly" ask about some of the wackadoodle moves you pulled last summer, when you resigned, and then didn't resign, and then did again, after getting your pension in a lump sum? Are you afraid they might ask about why you threatened to RUN FOR MAYOR AGAIN in the fall two weeks after resigning? Did you think those questions might make you look a little, oh, I don't know ... NUTS?

Oh, was that unfair? Really?

Or maybe you were you worried they might ask about the mess you left in the city's legal department? Or the shady contracts you signed with various vendors? Or the real estate deal for the bus station property? I could go on, or would those questions not be "fair."

Really?

I'll tell you what's not fair: You not giving the voters a chance to see you respond to questions they have a right to know the answers to.

The public did learn something important about you, however: that you're not man enough to stand up to honest scrutiny. And, they learned that despite all your macho posturing, W.W. Herenton is not very tough at all. Really.

The NRA Whores

Posted By on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 1:45 PM

The Smart City Memphis blog tells it like it is regarding the NRA's hold on Tennessee GOP legislators. A sample:

Remember these names.

They are the NRA’s bitches. And that explains why the gun-obsessed special interest group can talk to them like pimps.

* Shelby County State Senators: Brian Kelsey, R-Germantown; Mark Norris, R-Collierville; and Reginald Tate, D-Memphis.

* Shelby County State Representatives: Jim Coley, R-Bartlett; John DeBerry, D-Memphis; Ron Lollar, R-Bartlett; Steve McManus, R-Bartlett; Barrett Rich, R-Somerville; and Curry Todd, R-Collierville.

The most cynical thing of all is that many of these people know that their votes to put guns in bars is stupid public policy, but such is the freedom that you give up when you agree to whore for the NRA.

Read it all at Smart City.

Needless to say, I agree.

Memphis Gas Prices on the Rise

Posted By on Mon, May 3, 2010 at 9:56 AM

Each week, I receive an email from a website called Memphisgasprices.com. Here's this week's message:

Average retail gasoline prices in Memphis have risen 1.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.74/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.90/g, according to gasoline price website MemphisGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Memphis during the past week, prices yesterday were 81.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 5.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 7.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 84.3 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

Suffice it to say, with events in the Gulf and summer coming soon, it's probably not going to be happy times at the pump for the next few months.
