Borat Ends Career in Jackson, Mississippi

Not his, silly — some stupid TV producer's.

Posted by John Branston on Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 4:00 AM

Borat, the "Kazakhi journalist" created by Sacha Baron Cohen, is upsetting people both near and far. His movie, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, has already angered Kazakhstan officials and now it seems it has upset a former television producer for WAPT in Jackson, Mississippi.

According to Newsweek, Dharma Arthur is claiming that booking Borat on a live noon news show cost her job. While on the show — and subsequently in the movie — Borat makes scatological references, kisses the male anchor, stands up so he’s out of the screen, and then disrupts the weather report. Arthur, as quoted in Newsweek: “Because of [Baron Cohen], my boss lost faith in my abilities and second-guessed everything I did thereafter.”

It must be one hell of a movie.

You yanks got taken in by him, thats his style of comedy. Gets you of your guard, great for the audience but not for the victim :D:D:D:D. A Jewish guy that comes up to you and starts blaming the Jews for this and that and pretty soon your in there with him going along with it. He had to move on to you guys because you are an easy target and such a huge place. They cottoned on to him here so thats why he had to move on, only becuase celebs used to go onto his ali g show and send themselves up.

  • NYT's Ode to Midtown Memphis

Didja see the long piece on "indie" Memphis in The New York Times' travel section today?

Here's a taste: "This is indie Memphis, a long way from the tourist crush of Beale Street and Graceland, in spirit if not in actual distance. Midtown, just a short drive from a downtown famous for its blues, jazz and barbecue hounds, is its hipster epicenter. a diverse area that is now home to posh cocktail bars as well as divey rock clubs and longstanding juke joints. It parties late, very late, and stays friendly through the night."
