Memphis City Attorney Sara Hall is leaving her job to take a position with the Memphis and Shelby County Airport Authority, according to City Council Chairman Tom Marshall.
Hall notified Marshall, who in turn notified his colleagues Thursday. She took the job when Robert Spence left three years ago. Spence is now in private practice and running for the state Senate.
Hall often found herself in the middle of controversial issues involving Mayor Willie Herenton and members of the Memphis City Council such as annexation, ethics and conflicts of interest, and privatization of delinquent tax collections.
Hall's departure comes at a critical time. The Memphis Charter Commission, which she has been advising, is finding its way after being elected in 2006. Herenton is preparing to run for a fifth-consecutive four-year term in October. And two members of the City Council, Edmund Ford and Rickey Peete, are under indictment but continuing to vote and attend meetings.
