Dueling Parks Lectures in Memphis This Week

Posted By on Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 4:00 AM

Because of a scheduling quirk, two experts on parks will be making presentations in Memphis this week within 48 hours of each other.

On Thursday February 8th, the Memphis Botanic Garden will be the site for a 5 p.m. meeting called "Greening Greater Memphis" featuring speaker Alex Garvin. GreeningGreaterMemphis.org for more information, or go to the Flyer's website and see the letter from editor Bruce VanWyngarden in this week’s issue.)

On Saturday, February 10th, at 10 a.m., Charles Jordan will speak at Memphis College of Art Auditorium in Overton Park on "Renewing Our Cities, Restoring Our Parks." (see www.friendsforourriverfront.org for more information.) Jordan is chairman of the Conservation Fund.

Virginia McLean of Friends for Our Riverfront said their event was scheduled first and that the "Greening Greater Memphis" event was rescheduled. She urged park lovers to attend both events.

One of the sponsors of "Greening Greater Memphis" is the Memphis Riverfront Development Corporation, which has been on the opposite side of the fence from the Friends for Our Riverfront group on development of the downtown promenade. The groups, however, appear to have found common cause in giving greater attention to parks. — John Branston
