Elvis, Thomas Kinkade, and Graceland at 50

Posted by John Branston on Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 4:00 AM

If you love Elvis, Thomas Kinkade — or both — you can plunk down $250 to attend "The Light & Legend Event" this Friday and Saturday, March 23rd and 24th. You'll get to see the unveiling of Kinkade’s original painting entitled "Graceland, 50th Anniversary."

The painting commemorates Elvis’ purchase of the home a half a century ago and the landmark’s 25 years of being open to the public.

The event kicks off Friday evening at 6:30 with an informal welcome reception at Graceland’s Ticket Pavilion, and continues on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum at Graceland, where the painting will be shown and Kinkade will speak about how the King inspired him

VIP guests can mingle with Priscilla Presley, Kinkade, and other collectors and fans. On Saturday night at 7 p.m., beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the Gibson Guitar Center downtown, and guests can bid on a limited edition replica of "Graceland, 50th Anniversary."

Auction proceeds benefit Presley Place, which provides housing and other services to homeless families. According to Graceland Reservations, space is extremely limited. For more information call 1-800-238-2010, or visit Kinkade's really spiffy web site.

  • NYT's Ode to Midtown Memphis

Didja see the long piece on "indie" Memphis in The New York Times' travel section today?

Here's a taste: "This is indie Memphis, a long way from the tourist crush of Beale Street and Graceland, in spirit if not in actual distance. Midtown, just a short drive from a downtown famous for its blues, jazz and barbecue hounds, is its hipster epicenter. a diverse area that is now home to posh cocktail bars as well as divey rock clubs and longstanding juke joints. It parties late, very late, and stays friendly through the night."
