Updike at U of M Tonight

Posted on Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 4:00 AM

Salon.com has called him the “last great American man of letters,” while the Boston Globe has hailed his “exquisite grasp of ordinary miracles.” He’s John Updike, he might be the greatest living American novelist (R.I.P. Kurt Vonnegut), and he’s here in the Bluff City today.

The two-time Pulitzer Prize winner will enliven the air at the Michael Rose Theater at the University of Memphis at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Updike has also received the National Book Foundation Medal, the Howells Medal, and the National Book Award. No word as to whether he or not he wears the medals to his many speeches and public appearances.

Washington Post columnist David Broder, another Pulitzer winner, will also be speaking at Rose Theater earlier in the evening at 5 p.m.
