Beale Street Will Ban Guns

Posted by Flyer Staff on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 10:32 PM

The Beale Street Merchants Association and Performa Management announced today that all merchants on Beale would post signs banning guns. The move was in response to last week's passage of a bill in the Tennessee legislature allowing citizens with a gun-carry permit to take their guns to be taken into restaurants that serve alcohol.

Signs reading "No Guns Allowed" will be posted, beginning in July, said Performa CEO John Elkington. "We're going to try to prevent people from bringing concealed weapons onto the street," he said. Everyone entering the entertainment district will now be searched for weapons. Read the Flyer cover story on Guns in bars.

Interesting... so people who have no guns, no gun permits, no history of trouble with guns or anything else, who are suspected of no crime... are going to searched in the middle of a public street just because they want to listen to or play some music?

By whom? The goons who bodyslammed an old man into the hospital a short while back?

Or will the taxpayers be using Memphis PD to rack up as many 4th amendment lawsuits against the city as possible?

Personally, I'd settle for a pat-down every time I walked into a bar on Beale if it cuts down on the chances for bullets to start flying.

No problem with gun ownership, but as I mentioned in my own blog today (http://tinyurl.com/lcpqz4), the combination of weapons and alcohol just seems too much of a risk for people who just want to listen to or play some music...

Ahhh... the old 'Let's rush give up our freedom for the appearance of safety', with the media once again leading the charge.

Glad to see so many like minded good citizens agree on such things.

hey this is just business owners exercising their discretion on what happens inside the walls of their establishments... which is exactly how it should be for cigarettes, marijuana, gambling, and prostitution.

if you're itchin' to pack heat in a local bar, i'm sure there will be at least a couple of places that will accommodate. have fun. i'm off to purchase stock in hand-held wands & metal detectors.

Well, there goes my plan to set off some firecrackers in Handy Park to see which heroes would come running out, guns blazing.

at least now you'll be able to tell the criminals from the regular folk.

While the fear of mixing alcohol and guns may be well founded, the current law does nothing to prevent or facilitate an armed drunk in TN. TN has already passed a law that makes it a criminal act to possess a handgun (even with a permit) while under the influence of alcohol. According to TCA 39-17-1321: "Notwithstanding whether a person has a permit issued pursuant to § 39-17-1315 or § 39-17-1351, it is an offense for a person to possess a handgun while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance."

The law that just passed is simply allowing law abiding citizens to protect themselves in places that serve alcohol, but does not give them license to partake in it.

One more reason to avoid that tourist trap.

Quote from 1st paragraph, We're going to try to prevent people from bringing concealed weapons onto the street. If its a public street, how can they ban that. I thought it was only if you go to a bar/resturant that ban them. I seee a lawsuit coming up here....
