The Dalai Lama Lip Jiggle

Posted by Flyer Staff on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 11:21 AM

Memphis mayor pro tem Myron Lowery might have gotten a fist bump from the Dalai Lama, but Flyer reporter Bianca Phillips has him beat: She got a lip-ring jiggle.

Phillips was at the National Civil Rights Museum this morning for a Q&A with the Dalai Lama and will be covering the rest of today's Freedom Awards events.

"After the Q&A, he was leaving the auditorium and everyone was reaching out to him," she reports. "He stopped at me and said, 'Ooooh,' and he reached out and jiggled my lip ring.

"He kind of laughed to himself and then he walked on."

For more on the Dalai Lama's visit, keep checking the Flyer's site.

Of course everyone knows that touching any metallic element attached to the human lip is a sacred Tibetan ritual believed to keep the yak herds free of disease.

Phlo,

I didn't know that. Sounds like mysticism to me.

He touched my shoulder once while I was in the middle of a hacky-sack game. In fact, he touched every player in the circle and we never dropped the sack while he made his rounds. The Jewel is in the Lotus.

CHG: Mysticism? Actually it was an attempt at a little lighthearted humor. We haven't seen much of that around here since the classic BV-generated "tip jokes" back in the summer of '09. Ahh, those were the days weren't they?

Bianca P.: Thanks for sharing this charming glimpse of his way of viewing the world. Would that more of us could see as well.
