One Sentence Reviews: Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill

Joyce Cobb
  • Joyce Cobb
If you think you're going to The Hattiloo's Lady Day to hear Joyce Cobb tell blue stories and croon smooth covers of your favorite Billie Holliday tunes you'll be sucker punched and quite possibly knocked out (in the very best way) by the erratic singing and bitter ranting of a tired, beat down junkie making a provocative but ultimately pathetic last stand.

I should probably add that this is all a good thing.

Yes. It's play that provided me with clues as to why she was troubled.

It made me sympathetic and also amazed at her resiliency to provide music in such a way that we are still talking about her, listening to her, and yes, producing plays about her.

I knew that Joyce Cobb would do a great job singing but her ACTING was outstanding!!! It brought tears to my eyes Sunday afternoon the realness of her performance! Highly recommend it!

Sandy, I wasn't so sure about the singing part. Totally different vocal gifts. Thought it would be a disservice to both singers, and an some ways it is. Joyce doesn't ever really sound like Billie, and yet she isn't able to cut loose like she might in her own sets: A worst of both worlds situation. But how can I complain when she still sounds fantastic? And the acting seals the deal.
