If You Were R.C. Johnson . . .

Posted by Frank Murtaugh on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Our first quasi-formal survey here at Tiger Blue.

Among the five leading candidates for the almost-vacant job of football coach at the U of M — Terry Bowden, Gunter Brewer, Bud Foster, Larry Porter, Rick Stockstill — who excites you the most? (If you feel like you, yourself, would make a better candidate, send us a resume.)

Actually, if I would be someone, I would be whoever could fire Johnson and Raines. I think West had a point and R.C. should have been fired on the spot for suggesting a person should come here for the airport. And Shirley Raines should be thrown out for allowing someone to make a stupid statement like that. Everyone here needs to get their heads out of their butts and realize it is possible for a school to have both a good football and basketball team. Don't believe me? Ask Florida.

If I were RC. I would hire Tabitha from that Salon Takeover show.

None of the above... How about Phillip Fulmer - if nothing else it will give some real excitement to the next Tiger/Vols game!

People are still being unrealistic about the so-called candidates. Once again, I ask how do we know that these are people who are INTERESTED in the job and not just on the list? Other than Foster, I have yet to hear/read anything suggesting anybody is interested (but, admittedly, this is the first I've read today of news on the search...I am settling down to read all the latest on the situation now). I would love to see Tommy Tuberville with the job, but since Foster has said he is interested I think Memphis certainly should pursue him.

R.C. should just continue with his tired Ronald Reagan mannerisms and keep playing Max Von Mayerling to Shirley's Norma Desmond. He'll never lose his job. Ever.

Phlo,
Hopefully he will just lose his way to his job. Much like Reagan.

The one thing I do know is they need a coach with a strong recruiting background (I don't care for Bowden or Tuberville for what it's worth), then get rid of Max and Norma (thanks phlo, great reference). Once tweedledum and tweetledummer are out of the way, maybe some positive, energetic people (like the new BB coach) can fill their shoes and get the university moving in the right direction... improved facilities both athletic and academic, more research, on campus stadium, student safety crossing Central Ave and the train tracks.... sorry, got carried away

I lean towards Larry Porter. He'd be the first A-A coach, he's an alumnus, and he's a mega-recruiter for LSU. I think it would be a real shot in the arm for the program and the University. Just as if Shirley Raines were replaced by somebody like Henry Turley (and she and RC need to get the hell out of Dodge; enough already), the U of M needs to get better connected with place. This place....

Personally, I like the suggestion made on Vernon's show the other day - Gus Malzahn with Hugh Freeze as the assistant.

However, if you are forcing me to choose from the five you listed - I would have to go with Porter first on the strength of his recruiting and then probably Foster. But the idea of firing Johnson AND Raines is certainly not without merit.

I'd hire Mongo.

Waltzer, did you say Larry Porter would be the first African American coach?

Oh, how swiftly we forget that other Larry - Finch.
