Tigers' Paul on Watch List for Major Trophy

Posted By on Tue, May 25, 2010 at 3:31 PM

The Tiger football team lost a lot of offensive firepower from last year's squad (though only enough to win two games, so let's move on). One returning starter — senior center Brad Paul — is among 37 players on the spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given to college football's finest interior lineman. Paul is the only candidate representing a Conference USA team. He missed a total of 11 snaps in the 11 games he played in 2009.

When Sacramento's Tyreke Evans was named 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year, it marked the second straight year this honor went to a former Memphis Tiger (Derrick Rose took home the hardware a year ago). When was the last time a college could claim back-to-back ROYs?

In 1978, Phoenix guard Walter Davis was named Rookie of the Year. After the 1978-79 season, Kansas City Kings guard Phil Ford won the honor. Both Davis and Ford played their college ball at North Carolina.

Mark Little hit 21 homers for the 1994 Tigers, a team that finished with the best record in the program's history: 52-11. Little went on to hit .283 with 15 homers for the 2000 Pacific Coast League-champion Memphis Redbirds. He led that club with 22 stolen bases.
