Tiger Trivia Tuesday

Posted By on Tue, May 31, 2011 at 8:00 AM

For Tiger basketball fans, it's manna from heaven. Pending final details, it appears Memphis will play arch-rival Louisville on the hardwood next season, the first meeting between the Tigers and Cardinals since the epic Conference USA championship game (The Darius Washington Game) on March 12, 2005. The teams' next meeting will end the longest drought in a series that began on January 6, 1949.

Baseball's Chad Zurcher Named C-USA POY

Posted By on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Junior infielder Chad Zurcher today became the first Tiger baseball player to earn Conference USA Player of the Year honors. Zurcher enters this week's C-USA tournament in Pearl, Mississippi, with a .455 batting average, tops in the entire country. He also leads the NCAA in on-base percentage (.560), having been hit by a pitch no fewer than 16 times.

The last Tiger to earn a league's Player of the Year trophy was Mark Little in the Great Midwest Conference in 1994. (Little was later a member of the 2000 Pacific Coast League champion Memphis Redbirds.) Zurcher is the first Tiger since 2007 (Joey Lieberman) to be named first-team all-conference.

A pair of Tiger juniors — infielder T.J. Rich and outfielder Drew Martinez — were named second-team all-conference.

The Tigers' opening game of the C-USA tourney will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday against UCF.

The departure of quarterback Ryan Williams means the Tigers will have a fifth different passing leader in five years after the 2011 season. (Starting with Martin Hankins in 2007, the Tigers have been led by Arkelon Hall, Will Hudgens, and Williams over the last three seasons.)

What is the longest such stretch of quarterback turnover in Tiger history?

Steve Matthews

Remarkably, the U of M played nine seasons with nine different passing leaders from 1993 through 2001. Those quarterbacks, in order: Steve Matthews, Tony Scarpino, Joe Borich, Qadry Anderson, Bernard Oden, Neil Suber, Travis Anglin, Scott Scherer, and Danny Wimprine. Wimprine went on to lead the Tigers in passing all four years he played.
