by Jim Hanas & Mark JordanThe Flyer's music writers tell you where you can go.
If I were you, I wouldn't miss the Oblivians Thursday night at the Young Avenue Deli. Their new record, 9 Songs With Mr. Quintron, is a killer, and this is their first local show since they kicked off an East Coast tour with a free show at the Madison Flame almost two months ago. And they're fixing to hit the road again this month, so this might be the last chance to catch the hometown faves for a while. Joining them will be the Japanese all-girl trash-rock trio, the 5678s. If I were you, I'd plan on calling in sick Friday.
And after that whole day of rest, you lingering
punk fans out there will want to catch the
CD-release
party for local punk-poppers Pezz. Their latest, One Last Look,
was recorded at Los Angeles' West Beach Recorders, a studio that's been
a home to various Epitaph bands, and is being released by the label that
made 7 Seconds famous, BYO (stands for "Better Youth Organization").
The show gets under way 8 p.m. Saturday in the band's rehearsal garage at
654 Marshall. The bill will be filled out by the Subteens, Remus, and BYO-label-mates
Brand New Unit. -- Jim Hanas
I don't know if anything I can say will persuade
any of you to go to a jazz concert if you don't want to, but take my word
for it when I say Herb Ellis, who'll be in town this Saturday for
a pair of shows at the New Daisy, is well worth checking out. Why? Well,
first of all, Ellis is one of the finest guitarists ever. Now, that statement
may lead you to believe that he is all flash and no substance, but Ellis
is also one of the most thoughtful, tasteful players around. Witness his
outstanding star-making turns with the Oscar Peterson Trio and his vastly
underrated work with the late, great Ella Fitzgerald. So, if I were you,
I'd skip all the caterwauling three-chord pretenders and go catch a real
guitar master. -- Mark Jordan
