The Flyer's music writers tell you where you can go.
For my first pick, Ive got to go with my old friends Big Ass Truck. Except for the occasional guerilla gig at Alexs, I havent seen B.A.T. play a show in probably more than six months and certainly not their full-blown large-stage show. I have, however, had a chance to check out the new CD they just finished recording at Easley Studios. Due to be released later this fall, the new B.A.T. album is an intriguing mix of their best songwriting (always a weakness in the past) and their weirdest soundscape jams yet. Keep an ear open for both when they play the New Daisy Saturday, with the Drive By Truckers. Also this week: Texas songwriter legend Robert Earl Keen, a sometimes writing partner of Lyle Lovett, will be at Newbys Thursday night. You may not have heard of him, but Keen has a large and fanatical following among connoisseurs of the genre. If you are in the mood for something a little odd, head to the Arcade on Friday and check out the String Stranglers. This trio features Robert Gowan on guitar (normal enough), Paul Taylor on washtub bass (rare but not super unusual), and keyboardist Chris Parker on pots and pans. Of course, all this still wouldnt be all that strange if they were playing jug-style blues, but for the most part the String Stranglers repertoire is jazz. But when it comes down to it, whether theyre playing a John Coltrane or a Django Reinhardt tune, they swing. And finally, the best band name of the week award goes to Bongzilla, playing at Barristers on Sunday. Ive never heard them (judging from the rest of the lineup Adios Gringo and Incarceration Ill wager theyre metal), but with a nom de rock like that theyll either be really fun or really cruddy. Hows that for consumer information for ya? Mark Jordan |
