The Flyer's music writers tell you where you can go.Last week the wiring still had to be inspected, the sound system had yet to be installed, the kitchen wasn't finished, the beer license still hadn't gone through, and at least a dozen other major projects were waiting to be completed. But ready or not, Chris Walker has committed to opening his new club, Last Place On Earth, this weekend. Of course the place is nice and clean now, but after this weekend's show, the place will probably be trashed. On Sunday, it's a fairly hard-core lineup with Soilent Green, Today Is The Day, Morgion, Exhumed, Adios Gringo, and Walker's own Diarrhea Of Anne Frank. Originally scheduled for Last Place On Earth this weekend, the Death Week Death Trip has been moved to the South End. This two-night Memphis indie-rock extavaganza is highlighted on Friday by the ever-rocking Vegas Thunder and Nick Diablo's sophisticated Velvet Underground-inspired troupe Deathray. The Porch Ghouls, the Royal Dragons, and the teaming of MC Tracheotomy and Mr. Quintron round out the night. On Saturday, Monsieur Jeffrey Evans' '68 Comeback will take the stage. This trash blues pioneer misses as often as he hits live, but when he does hit, it's something to behold. Also on Saturday will be the Lost Sounds, the New Memphis Legs, Geraldine, and, following their CD-release party at the Young Avenue Deli, a late performance by the Neckbones. -- Mark Jordan |
