On a MissionThe Church of Scientology is still misunderstood in Memphis.by PEGGY CRAWFORD It is an unfortunate failing of our society that we are afraid and intolerant of those things we do not understand. Too often, instead of using our God-given ability to communicate and learn from others, we segregate ourselves from those people who are different from us. For centuries, we have killed each other over racial, ethnic, and religious issues. The ultimate travesty and falsehood is that these actions of intolerance are often done in the name of God. The Church of Scientology Mission of Memphis was opened to help heal these breaches. Memphians Lisa Marie Presley and Isaac Hayes sponsored the opening of this mission for the purpose of bringing the people of Memphis together by utilizing the services that are unique to Scientology. Our workshops, classes, lectures, and pastoral counseling are designed to help people get along better, communicate more openly, heal relationships, and relieve the stress and trauma of daily living. They are open to everyone, regardless of race, religion, or background. Scientology is non-dogmatic and does not require specific beliefs, only an ethical conduct. Our mission has been in Memphis for a little more than two years. It has become a haven for people of various backgrounds to get together and improve their lives. The Church also runs the Literacy, Education and Ability Program (LEAP). This free program has been helping students of all ages become more literate as well as learn vital study tools. The programs purpose is to be a catalyst for Memphis youth to help them become prepared to compete successfully in todays environment. Memphis has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Through its legendary music and arts, it has become a unique city, bringing these groups together into a community. However, there are those who continue old hatreds, which have mellowed perhaps but are just as visible in the lack of open communication between people of differing race and religious beliefs. It is the purpose of the Memphis mission of the Church of Scientology to do all it can to bridge that communication gap and help the true heart of Memphis win against this bigotry. It is the Churchs belief that everyone will benefit from the sharing of cultures that would ensue. One of the most popular services offered at the mission is Success Through Communication. This course teaches students each part of the communication formula. The student first learns to simply be there with another person without doing something else. He/she then learns how to get his/her point across followed by learning how to fully understand someone else. It continues adding pieces together until honest, open, and comfortable communication comes easily. It is self-paced, as are all of the courses at the mission, to ensure that each student can fully apply what they learn before they go on to the next step. Graduates of the course have expressed improvements in their ability to have meaningful relationships. Others have experienced improvements in their work environment. They all say they feel more comfortable to be themselves with others. The Church of Scientology Mission of Memphis is open seven days a week and anyone can drop in and take a tour. Our Sunday services are also open to the public and are quite unique. There is also a comprehensive book on the subject written by its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, entitled What Is Scientology?, which is available in the local libraries. L. Ron Hubbard said, On the day when we can fully trust each other, there will be peace on earth. We can all experience a bit more peace, both inner peace as well as peace in our community if we rid ourselves of those barriers which cause such mistrust.
