"You'll Put Your EYE Out, Ralphie."

11/20/2008 - 09:06 am
Some enterprising eBay-er has put up the ultimate Christmas item: You and your family can bid to spend Christmas in the Cleveland, Ohio, house used in the classic television movie, A Christmas Story.

And the money goes to a good cause, too -- the Wounded Warrior project for American vets. The current bid is only $2331. Check it out here.

As Darren McGavin would say, "Fra-GEE-lay!"

11/19/2008 - 10:10 am
The Judgment Stands Mark Brown, the communications/political director of the Tennessee state Senate caucus, has responded to last week's wrap-up in "Politics" concerning his party's 2008 electoral misfortunes. 11/20/2008 - 02:13 am
Cautiously and Wryly, A C Starts His Run for City Mayor at Racquet Club Fund-raiser Speaking modestly but confidently, Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton took the first concrete steps Wednesday evening toward a run for Memphis mayor in 2011 -- or earlier. Young Leaders Encourage Engagement

After bringing Newark, New Jersey, mayor Cory Booker to Memphis to speak, the Leadership Academy felt like it needed a special event to follow the energetic young mayor.

The result was one of the group's Celebrate What's Right luncheons, this one with a panel of "young politicos."

The Future of Print

11/19/2008 - 10:10 am
Almost nothing has worked this year for E. W. Scripps, the parent company of The Commercial Appeal.

First, however, a little perspective is in order. The CA can and does still make money, although Scripps won't say how much or what its profit margin is at individual properties. The Scripps newspaper chain earned $58 million in profits on $431 million of operating revenue in the first nine months of 2008 ...

EDITORIAL: It's Up to Bass Pro

11/18/2008 - 11:51 pm
EDITORIAL: It's Up to Bass Pro After a county commission vote on Monday enabling an agreement with Bass Pro on Pyramid use, it's now up to the giant outdoors-oriented chain to put up or shut up. It critics have accused the chain of dilatory tactics in negotiations with other cities and with floating sham proposals for the sake of brand advertising. There is an easy way to counter that contention now that official resistance on the part of local government is no more.
