Memphis City Schools superintendent Carol Johnson recently discovered that only 30 of the 88 math instructors in Memphis 22 under-performing middle and high schools are actually licensed to teach math. That means only 34 percent, or just a little over one-third, of the math teachers actually have the proper certification to teach in their field. That, in turn, means that 58 instructors (66 percent or roughly two-thirds) of the current instructors lack the proper credentials to teach math. The arithmetically challenged Fly was able to arrive at these fig ures be cause he was educated elsewhere.
