Flo Roach

Flo Roach is a theater teacher for Memphis City Schools. She's also an actress. She has a small role in the upcoming film adaptation of The Help and is perhaps best known locally for her work in Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church's Umoja Kamaru.

On top of all that, Roach is a very practical person.

Roach's Calling All Men, which debuts on Saturday, started out as a one-woman show, but then Roach realized she wouldn't have time to put in all the work that a one-woman show needs.

"I decided to add people," Roach says.

She added 100 people, and those 100 are all men. In fact, Calling All Men, just in time for Father's Day, is one for the good guys. "Men who mess up get the publicity," Roach says. "This is a salute to good men."

Calling All Men is a play within a play. Roach stars as Etta, who is busy with a play called Calling All Men. Etta is also busy with Ray, who wants to marry her. But no amount of emails, texts, or phone calls can sway the anti-marriage Etta.

Most of those 100 men are part of a show choir in the Calling All Men within the main Calling All Men. Hallelujah FM's Michael Adrian Davis is part of the cast as are recording artists Courtney Franklin and Eric Johnson.

Roach promises a surprise ending for Calling All Men and notes that a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to HER, a shelter for abused/homeless women and their children.

As for those good men ... Roach is pressed for an example. "Bill Cosby is the first one I think of," she answers. "Barack Obama, definitely."

And the bad guys? "I can't answer that!" she exclaims. "I'm going to stay away from that."

"Calling All Men," at the University of Memphis' Michael D. Rose Theater, Saturday, June 18th, 7 p.m. $30. For tickets, call 331-3515.
