On Saturday, July 21st, from 6 to 11 p.m., WEVL FM 89.9 invites its listeners to the grounds of the National Ornamental Metal Museum for the latest installment of its popular Blues on the Bluff fund-raiser. The concert begins with a set by Lightnin’ Malcolm (pictured), who brings his Telecaster chicken-picking to bear on north Mississippi trance blues. He’ll be joined by Marquell Kimbrough on drums.
Fans who prefer their blues served up with fat horns and gruff gospel shouting will want to stick around for Elmo and the Shades. Jimbo Mathus closes the show with the Tri-State Coalition, a roots-inspired rock experience in the tradition of the Band.
Mathus played in Memphis rock bands as a teenager, but since then, he’s distinguished himself as a swing player, a blues man, and a honky-tonk hero. The Tri-State Coalition brings all of his peripatetic musical travels to a crossroads.
Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids under 11. Coolers are discouraged, but drinks are available. Central BBQ will serve sandwiches, turkey legs, and barbecued portobello mushroom sandwiches. Food-service profits are donated to WEVL.
