Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

Chris, I don't think you're a "heap big racist". I don't know you, but you sound like yet another self-righteous white Memphian who has no idea what it's like to live in a neighborhood plagued by gangs. As a gay man, my circle of friends includes people who think as you do. But my opinion, whether right or wrong, is that my experience living in South Memphis 30+ years trumps your political correctness.

I agree with what Mr. McDaniel said in this article, words and meaning alike.

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

Terry, thanks for pointing out the obvious. When Chris came under fire back there in the thread, I had to stifle the urge, as a loyal friend and colleague, to come to his aid. But then I figured: Just what good could I -- "botcher" and "bullshitter" that I am -- do for him? But I do thank you and C.L. and a coupla others for shifting us back (fingers crossed) to the main point.

For the record, btw, I wish I had not included the last line in my previous article -- the one with the "gangbangers" quote. That was my bad. It just introduced a red herring.

Yes, ERN; I am obtuse. Please explain how I am on your "to-do" list.

Pass the law. Give the people what they want!

"Give The People What They Want"

You got to give the people, now
Give the people what they want
Well, well, well, well

No, don't know you
You got to give the people
Give the people what they want?

But I done been all over the world
And everybody feels the same
It's a unanimous decision
I said they're ready for a change, yeah, yeah, yeah

Don't know you
Got to give the people, give it up
Give the people what they want?
Well, well

No, don't know? You don't know, no
Got to give the people
Well, well
Give the people what they want

Chris: agreed. Fortunately, many of the dinosaurs who perpetuate the racist dialogues will soon be extinct. I only hope they aren't teaching their children the same crap; and if they are, I hope their children are smart enough to ignore them.

Re: “Key GOP Leader Prophesies Gun-Carry Bill Will Be Deep-Sixed

Go ahead and pass the law. Wasn't legislation such as this what the "majority" of voters in this red state wanted? There's nothing to fear. "We come in peace."

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

Terry, I get that completely. And Jack had me eating out of his hand until equating "Gangbanger" with AC's "friend or foe comment." Which seems to say the opposite. The main story shouldn't be subverted, but the second--only racism trumps the gun fetish--shouldn't be swept under the rug.

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

More importantly; you--and many others on this thread are missing the central point of Bakers' article. This isn't a matter of the origin of the racial nomenclature du jour. This is a matter of the Tennessee state GOP legislators imposing their will on municipalities and counties. Many of these GOP legislators pander to their gun fetishist constituents---and even as they rail against the federal "gubmint" infringing upon states' rights, they--as State legislators--impose their state "gubmint" beliefs upon the cities and counties beyond their borders. They are, in short: hypocrites.

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

For the record: a gun is not a "human right." It is--for some people--a fetish.

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

@ERN

Anyone that refers to human right as a fetish and politicians that respect that right as "cower (ing) to the demands" of others should be on your list of "to do's", if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

Well, I do find it strangely offensive when someone refers to me as "Bro". And downright odd when black kids call me their nigger.

Are there any other words groups use to self identify that others might want to use with caution?

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

I'm not sure why the word "perceived" has tripped you up.
Upon reflection, I think I should modify my statement: As long as there are politicians who cower to the demands of gun fetishists, nothing will change.

@CL

I tried to tell him that it isn't a race thing. He doesn't want to believe it.

@Terry Scott

"Perceived"? Really? That's all you've got? The word "Perceived"?

Re: “Of Gun Bills and Gangbangers: a Commentary

As long as gun fetishists value their perceived second amendment rights over the overall safety of the public, nothing will change.
