Re: “Sounding the Call

This project is not about blaming anyone. This project is about helping grieving families and friends by giving them an outlet to grieve without judgement. It doesn't matter how the user got hooked to this drug, whether it be from prescription drugs after surgery or a straight up junkie, they need help and resources to get clean and the families need support.

Re: “Liquor Before Beer …

I always heard the adage as "liquor before beer, never fear; beer before whiskey, mighty risky". And doesn't it sound more pithy? More alliterative? Or even more southern?

I agree it's good advice not to drink on an empty stomach, especially with hard liquor. I find bread is usually available at a bar, so it's a good idea to eat a little to provide a buffer against rapid alcohol absorption (sure recipe for a hangover). And watch the alcohol content in your beer -- there's much more variation these days among brands, especially with craft beers. It started with those "ice" beers, that were about 5 percent alcohol (stronger than the normal 3.5 percent mainstream beers), but now you might order a craft beer that pushes 7 or even 9 percent. I drink beer mostly for the taste, but unfortunately my drinking arm only has one speed setting, so I must avoid the high-alcohol beers!

But the best advice in this column is to eat something first -- especially with hard liquor. Bread makes a great buffer for the alcohol, and it's a readily available bar food.

Re: “Up in Smoke

There is no easily-enforced standard for measuring the degree of intoxication of a THC-intoxicated driver (a blood test is invasive and requires a judge's approval, and even then THC level is not necessarily directly related to toxicity since it's fat-soluble and some are regular users). Measuring levels of THC/intoxication is important, since modern weed has a much higher variance of THC, unlike a generation ago when all of it was relatively weak. Until there's a simple, on-the-spot test for accurate testing of intoxication levels, I'm against making marijuana available for legal consumption. Driving in Memphis is already dangerous enough.

I am all for libertarian freedoms, but let's think this through before we make it legal -- public safety is paramount.

Re: “Gannett Stalls Severance Payments to Former Commercial Appeal Employees

Does Gannett legally have to honor all the terms of a union contract with the former owners of the CA?

As for severance, if Gannett fired these employees then certainly the employees are deserving of severance under terms of the contract with Gannett.

It could be worse -- Gannett could have made you play Hunger Games with H1B visa holders. Like the ones Disney made their fired employees train, in exchange for a little more severance pay.

Re: “Black Women’s Work

Good stuff Troy, but I do wonder how long African-Americans have to play the game, or rather scene in Casablanca, "I'm shocked that there is racism in America." During the Reagon and Bush 1 eras, they specifically made it harder to prove racial discrimination in the workplace and even if you have a good case they stacked the lower courts with judges who believe that you have to bring the noose and sheet in court to prove that there is a Klan.

I want to live at least in a community where there is less crime, great schools, respectful neighbors--not a place called the "hood," and I can eat dinner without getting shot or not getting robbed in my driveway. I am an African-American man that thinks we have spent far too much time asking white folks to respect us as human beings. If being spat upon, being beaten to a pulp, the teeth of German Shepards breaking our skin, lynchings, rape, police brutality isn't enough to show the good white folks how much we love them then I seriously doubt that anything would. That is the short history of our relationship with White America.

White folks spend far less time on racial reconciliation than we do and have much more economic wealth, better schools, better health outcomes, better communities by and large, less crime and there is no such thing as a "food desert" in the middle class and above majority white communities. Sure, there are good white folks in this world. The problem is that there aren't, or weren't enough, standing up to counter the bad ones that didn't just leave us alone to seek the American Dream. How long will it take African-Americans to figure it out? Frankly, while Donald Trump is an indication that there is little hope to reach the goal of racial reconciliation, the eight years of Barack Obama is an ABSOLUTE testament of its folly.

You can't change the hearts and/or minds of any human being. They and they only have that power. Africa-America should take that to the bank, deposit it, while the interest you should collect is in yourselves. That is an investment with a selfish return as most investments are but it is also an investment in your children and hope. Most human beings are able to put up with the crap of life because they are working for a better tomorrow for their children.

The only thing worse than failure is not admitting that you've failed, because until you do you may never work towards winning and victory. This attempt to spend time on racial reconciliation has failed by White folks, if it were ever attempted in the first place. Why are African-American trying to reconcile? For what? For allowing ourselves to be abused in a racist society?

The victory looks like safe communities, less crime and violence in those communites, clean, healthy, businesses, competitive schools and a classic sense of what a neighborhood is--and feels like naturally--rather than something called the "hood."

Peace.

You know, this is a right to work state. There can't be much of a surprise. Well, one thing is for sure. Whether you think that the CA has a conservative or liberal bent it is clear there is no doubt that they follow the worst of conservative vulture capitalism in business management

Charles Browning, there there now, try reading it again your hands over you eyes and fingers in your ears. Better?

Alice P Jones, the Left maybe, or maybe it was... Satan!

Perhaps the greatest disservice the Donald has made this country is to validate lazy trolling. Sad. What, too many words?

You had me until you unwisely made it a sexist and racist story. It's wrong but let the 'wrong' stand on its own merit.

Keep race and sex of the employees out of it.
