Re: “NEW UPDATE (More Names Added): More Layoffs Hit The Commercial Appeal

Nikki Boertman is a phenomenal photographer. Phil Stukenborg is a sports section institution. Michael Donahue? how could you????? Jody Callahan also an institution at the CA. This could be the kiss of death for the Commercial Appeal. Remember when Bud Adams tried to have the Houston Oilers play in Memphis while the new stadium was being built in Nashville? Memphis revolted and DID NOT SUPPORT THEM! Same thing could happen here....................

A newspaper for Trump voters? LOL. We already got one. It's called the "National Enquirer."

Re: “Gannett Unveils Plan for The Commercial Appeal

The Commercial Appeal contains more Washington Post articles than it does true Memphis focused stories. Also, the political views of the Commercial Appeal are so anti-Trump and anti-conservative that there is no longer any newspaper in Memphis that represents half of the country. Somebody needs to start a newspaper with a more conservative viewpoint that can serve the mid-south area. Only three counties went for Clinton out of 95 in Tennessee and most of north Mississippi and Western Arkansas voted for Trump. Let's have some representation that covers multiple points of view. If you live in Memphis...you already get the "diversity message"! It is obvious from the reorganization actions taken by USA Today that the local staff has no REAL control over the paper anymore.

It should be noted: the same letter, nearly word for word, appeared in the Tennesean under another person's name.

C'mon now, it's hard enough to get promotion for a local band without getting their names wrong.

Re: “Whistle-Blower’s Crime

@Bric,

On the original note, the irony here is that the argument you made about who is doing the leaking would be used by both sides to argue that one type of leak is bad, while the other isn't.

Re: “Gannett Unveils Plan for The Commercial Appeal

A lot of this stuff isn't up to Graham, but handed down to him from Corporate. So you have to feel for the guy, trying to implement changes which aren't his doing. However, he still represents the company, and as a Company Man, he has to be the face of those decisions. In that regard, the musical chairs in staffing don't really matter to me. Gannett has eliminated the largest part of the staff in whom I placed my trust, as a reader. Further, the corporate decisions to remove most of the production staff to other places, is a net negative to our community, and requires me to assess whether I want to support jobs in Nashville, or Jackson, or instead support those here at home in Memphis.

It is for these reasons that I cancelled my subscription at the last set of changes a year ago. As we see the ongoing devolution of Gannett's plan for the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, I feel even more justified by my decisions at that time. I will never support such diminution of a once great paper, and would frankly rather see them go out of business, than continue to aid their parasitic relationship with the Memphis community.

It is a sad day for Memphis, neighbors.

Re: “Gannett Unveils Plan for The Commercial Appeal

But the paper will be edited and laid out in Nashville and printed in Jackson, all work that could be done BY Memphians FOR Memphians.

Re: “New Plan for Commercial Appeal To Be Unveiled Wednesday

I hate Gannett. It's turning our country into one big cesspool for news. No objective journalism allowed there. The CA has become a skinny, threadbare read with no independent opinions allowed. Gannett is doing this to cities all over the country. There is very little variance among them save paid obits, etc. BAH!!

Re: “NEW UPDATE (More Names Added): More Layoffs Hit The Commercial Appeal

With the disappearance of Michael Donahue, Beth Gooch, Phil Stukenborg, Jody Callahan and Mark Richens alone, the CA is losing invaluable character and local institutional knowledge. Can't replace those with digital content, off-site editing and design, or USA Today inserts.

@LWC - Yep. Steve Ross was right about it in 2011, and has only been proved to be more prescient as time goes on.
